 What’s New for the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE?

The Mercedes-Benz GLE does not worry about the non-essentials that most of its European competitors claim to possess. Its main purpose is to be a family wagon, and it is a very good one as such. It is larger than the average compact SUV which allows it to provide enough room to accommodate five adults in supreme comfort. For 2018, the model improves performance and expands its equipment list. It is available in four flavors: the GLE 350, the hybrid GLE 550e, the AMG® GLE 43, the AMG® GLE 63, and the AMG® GLE 63 S. Standard features on all trims include aluminum roof rails, interior LED lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, heated front seats, and a power sunroof. Other equipment includes a power liftgate, Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel, MB-Tex upholstery, Eucalyptus wood trim, an 8.0-inch touchscreen display, and dual USB audio ports. The GLE 550 only offers 4WD and adds side-mirror logo projectors, leather upholstery, topstitched dashboard trim, and navigation alongside hybrid-oriented features. The hybrid also includes a Comand infotainment system with a touchpad controller, dual USB audio ports, a DVD/CD player, smartphone integration, and a Harman/Kardon audio system. The AMG® GLE 43 is the model’s entry into the AMG® world and installs a performance-focused 4MATIC®-enhanced engine, AMG® Sports Airmatic suspension, paddle shifters, Gloss Black exterior accents, and larger 20-inch wheels alongside AMG® body styling cues. The GLE 63 benefits from dual chrome AMG® exhaust tips, AMG® 10-spoke wheels, active LED headlights, Exclusive Nappa leather upholstery, a surround-view camera system, and heated/cooled cup holders. Stepping up to the GLE 63 S earns you 21-inch AMG® cross-spoke wheels, ventilated 14-way power front seats, and a Dinamica steering wheel, among others.

A 3.5-liter V-6 making 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque drives the base GLE 350 and its 4MATIC® variant. EPA rates it at 18/23 mpg city/highway. The GLE 550e 4MATIC® plug-in combines an electric motor and a 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine to give out 436 hp and 479 lb-ft. The hybrid returns 43 mpge and 20/23 mpg with and without the hybrid system respectively and covers eight miles on pure electric power. The AMG® GLE 43 offers an exciting performance thanks to a 385-hp, 384-lb-ft 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 that returns 17/23 mpg. A 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 powers both the AMG® GLE 63 and the top-of-the-range GLE 63 S. It cranks out 550 hp and 516 lb-ft in the former and 577 hp and 561 lb-ft in the latter. EPA places both forms at 14/18 mpg. All models come with a seven-speed automatic, apart from the AMG®43 which sports a nine-speed. Safety-wise, the 2018 GLE is a recipient of the IIHS highest designation of Top Safety Pick+. It received the highest rating of “Good” in all crash tests. Standard safety features include trailer stability assist, Active Brake Assist, crosswind assist, Attention Assist, lane keep warning, blind-spot monitoring, and Pre-collision preparation).
